Search engine optimization SEO started in the very early days of the Internet. In the past websites would put keywords in the meta-tags, which would then be looked at by search engines to determine if that website was pertinent to a certain term. This methodology work well provided each website was forthright in putting in the appropriate search terms for their particular site. This gave the control to the website. However, the problem arose when many websites decided to misrepresent their websites in the hopes of gaining search engine ranking for at certain search term. Example of this would be a website that had nothing to do with low-cost mortgages or Viagra or some other product using the keywords to hopefully rank highly for that search term. These websites would then use the ranking to get visitors and push those visitors to other websites where they would then I get paid for sales generated.
To combat this problem search engine started using a different methodology to rank websites. Now search engines do not look at keywords that are placed in the meta-tags on a website rather they look at a myriad of other factors but most important are links from other websites the search engine deems as “authoritative” on the subject matter related to the search term. as a way of determining how a particular website is pertinent to certain search term.
Links from other websites are preeminent in determining search engine ranking. However in the past few years social media has become more and more popular. Google and other search engines have realized that links from social media are also a good indication of how pertinent the website is for certain keywords.
