WHAT MAKES A GOOD WEBSITE?
Good design encompasses all the visual elements which makes it difficult to pin down. You may not be able to put your finger on it, but you know good design when you see it.
The style should be consistent on all your pages. It should reflect the image of your business. Great style focuses the attention of the viewer to what you want them to see and do. It is a proven fact that a call to action on a website creates business for the website owner.
Simple is better for the style of lettering on your website. Not only should be easy to read but give the impression of the style of the website. Many people opt for a san-serif font like Arial because it is simple, however, a font like Times Roman often is better for more traditional businesses like lawyers or accountants. There are technical reason not use very unusual fonts as the font would have to be embedded in the website and downloaded when the viewer goes to that page. This slow loading time could frustrate many viewers who hit the back button and go on to another site.
A logo is basic marketing and an important aspect of any business. The logo does not have to be a fancy graphic, often a nicely proportioned text using the name of the business is sufficient. Most importantly the logo must portray the purpose of the business.
The colors in a website are often overlooked. Color often gives stature to a particular industry. Take a look at any health insurance company, they all use mute greens and blues. These colors build trust. (They are also the colors hospitals use for the same reason.) They would never use a shocking red or yellow which would see to adventuresome. Colors evoke emotional responses. Selecting a color that targets your industry or approach to business is an important decision for your website.
Content is king!! You can have the best made website, but without well-written, unique, relevant content your site will not be the success you want. It is important to include: text, images and videos, regardless of the purpose for your website. These elements may be in differing amounts depending upon your business, but having them in your website are what viewers expect.
Navigation is often overlooked. Great content is useless if visitors can’t find what they want on your website. Luckily creating good website navigation is easy with many tools for creating menus and internal linking. It is important that website have a search function, especially if you are a product driven website.
